THE Co.N.A.P.I. NATIONAL EXPRESSES GRAVE CONCERN ABOUT THE ECONOMIC REPERCUSSIONS OF POSSIBLE TARIFFS ANNOUNCED BY THE UNITED STATES. KEY SECTORS OF THE ITALIAN ECONOMY, SUCH AS EXPORTS, FASHION AND THE FOOD INDUSTRY, ARE AT RISK OF BEING HEAVILY DAMAGED BY THESE PROTECTIONIST DECISIONS.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced his intention to impose 25 percent tariffs on European products, claiming that the European Union was created to “rip off the United States” . This statement triggered concerns in European financial markets, with stock markets falling and widespread fears among investors.
Italy, whose exports account for about 40 percent of GDP, could be significantly affected by such protectionist measures. Key sectors such as Made in Italy, the food industry and fashion are particularly exposed to these potential tariffs . The Confederazione Nazionale Artigiani e Piccoli Imprenditori ( Co.N.A.P.I. Nazionale ) expresses concern, calling Trump’s announcement “an attack on business and labor ” and stresses the risk of a “deindustrialization of our continent” .
The European Commission said the EU “will react firmly and immediately to unjustified barriers to free and fair trade” . Commission Vice President Stéphane Séjourné added that “barriers to fair trade are unjustified, especially between trading partners.”
This situation highlights the need for diplomatic solutions to avoid a trade war that could harm both economies. It is desirable for the parties involved to focus on constructive dialogue to resolve current tensions and jointly address global challenges such as protecting the environment and promoting social justice.
